For a rather large Rails project:

Looking at the Gemfile, I feel the need to clean it up. But this works pretty good at the moment :)

Setting up infinity test was soooo easy and well documented, it really was fun: https://github.com/tomas-stefano/infinity_test

A problem with the way we declare private methods in Ruby is the fact that when a class gets larger and more private methods are added to it, we lose sight of whether we are looking at a private, protected or public method. This is because the private declaration is a few hundred lines…

This is why I miss a private do ... end block sometimes. But I’ll be the repeating private declaration in future.

I like the modular approach too, especially when you have huge classes. I like this post :)

Reading this article and comments really helps understanding, which kind of trouble my girlfriend is going through. She’s doing her PhD in Biochemistry at the Harvard Medical School.

The environment she’s working in, is pure competition. The lack of collaboration efforts in her lab is a huge waste of resources and motivation.

As competition is a key motivator, I for my part have to admit: I love competition. BUT:

Sabotage is more than cheating, it’s what makes you a loser
I’m aiming to achieve something with my team, and I have a great one!
Science is more of a fame game to me than real business

I like find_or_create a lot, and factory_girl is one of my favorites :) So during my specs, I’d like to create some factories in case they didn’t exist already.

Well you should really not do this too often, because hitting the database and then again slows down your tests alot.

Entrepreneurs und Design-Agenturen bilden den Grossteil unserer aktuellen Kunden.

Wir haben unsere Kunden durch Empfehlungen und Twitter bekommen. Sobald sich die Auftragslage aendert, werden wir unsere Seite mal aktualisieren :)

Der Hauptgrund warum wir eine haftungsbeschraenkte Firma gegruendet haben war eindeutig um uns vor Patentstreits zu schuetzen.

Wenn man sich ueberlegt, in was fuer Schwierigkeiten man geraten kann, wenn man sich fuer technische Problemloesungen interessiert zeigen zwei Artikel die ich heute gelesen habe.

Herr van Rijn hat an einem Wochenende eine Software geschrieben, die Lieder in eine Textrepraesentation umwandelt und auf diesen auf Muster untersucht.

Technische und mathematische Problemloesungen die er in seiner Freizeit zu loesen versucht haben arge Konsequenzen: Die Firma Landmark Digital Services droht ihn zu verklagen, wenn er seine Software veroeffentlicht.

Die Intention spielt also keine Rolle. Wenn man den Algorithmus im Netz veroeffentlicht, werden Patentverletzungen weltweit moeglich. Wer will da schon der Initiator sein?

2001 wurde ein russischer Wissenschaftler vom FBI verhaftet, weil er sich mit der Kryptoanalyse von eBooks auseinander gesetzt hat und dazu auf einer Konferenz eine Praesentation hielt (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitri_Witaljewitsch_Skljarow).
